HostRocket Review

HostRocket General Impression

The most disappointing about Host Rocket is customer service, which is pitifully fragile when compared to that provided by other companies on this list. Whenever you call, you bump into the automatic answering machine or have to hold on while they are receiving other calls. In addition, orders must be submitted online, but not over the phone, which can be rather annoying in some cases. They claim to have around 30 technical support staff, but still are somehow unable to manage the flow of customers.

When it comes to servers, they are definitely above average, with less than one thousand users on each server, which guarantees stable performance and less vulnerability to hacker attacks. The level of uptime is rather high, and their packages include all common customer-friendly features that are on par with those provided by competing co-location vendors. They currently plan to offer many new features in the future such as load balancing. In addition, Host Rocket offers one of the most reliable backbones around, thanks to its OC-192 connection with Qwest. Thus, you will get above average web hosting platform to launch your business on the Web.

The HostRocket IDC features two seperate, fully redundant fiber paths out of the building. There is a OC-12 SONET ring which leaves the building at two different locations. The building is accessible through card key access. Power is delivered to the servers only after passing through power conditioning equipment and is backed up by both battery and gas generators. The network sits behind redundant firewalls setup in a failover array for redundant protection from DOS and DDOS attacks.

Owning our own datacenter allows us to provide you with unmatched reliability and uptime. Not being dependant on other companies to provide us with access to the servers, reboot servers, make hardware upgrades on the fly, and fix problems before they become problems for your customers allows us to keep your sites available faster and more reliably than our co-located competitors, and without worry of being dependant on other providers in this time of instability in the communications industry

Customer Testimonial:

"As for everyone running professional business on the Internet, resilience is of great importance for me. In the past I have had certain problems with server network availability caused by lack of redundancy. It is difficult to assess the actual character of redundancy promised by hosting providers. But with Host Rocket I hit the nail on the head! I'm not strong in technical specs, and the words "redundant CSS switches" convey little meaning to me. Still I'm greatly satisfied with the performance of my site - and it's enough to entrust Host Rocket with my further Internet projects."

I've used hostrocket for MANY years for just about all of my sites (5-10). I am alternately very happy and extremely unhappy with their service. They had a cPanel vulnerability that was resulting in constant hacking for many weeks before they fixed all of their machines. They occasionally go down for hours at a time--with EVEN THEIR OWN SITE unavailable. Right now it is March 28, 2008 and they are in the middle of an email server update that they warned us was happening. They said that ARCHIVED mail on the servers would be unavailable for as many as 72 hours, but that NEW mail would not be interrupted. But instead of uninterrupted mail, their entire company is down as are ALL of my sites. It's crazy. Absolutely NOTHING is working. The mailservers are down, my sites are down, THEIR site is down, their DNS servers are unresponsive, their phones are busy. And this is not the first time that something like this has happened. For several years, I had no problems, but in the last few years, I see this occurring more and more. I really liked the company and the features they provide. Their tech support is mostly good and responsive, but I am getting very TIRED of their downtimes. They simply don't have enough redundancy in their systems (I guess)...

Since my previous comment about e-mail instability, HostRocket has been excellent. Apparently whatever issues they were experiencing have been resolved and I am back to recommending them to my clients.

HostRocket had been an excellent webhost for quite some time.. Now all of a sudden they can't seem to get a handle on something as simple as e-mail services, although everything else seems fine.

I'm not sure they have a grasp on the fact that some of their clients run their businesses on HostRocket web and e-mail servers. It's becoming all too frequent for their e-mail servers to be down or experiencing "delays".

Having 20 years experience in the IT industry, I can understand the complexities of running a data center. I also understand that if you can't keep the systems running you will lose customers. I'm not sure HostRocket understands that simple fact.
