Web Master's Review:

General Impression - Category Rating 65%
At first, we were skeptical with iPowerWeb's generous offers at such prices, their responsiveness in terms of customer support and many other things. We first reviewed iPowerWeb's service last year. At that time we stopped evalutating it pretty soon again due to a few advertised features that have not in any way met our expectations. After keeping a close eye on them until now, noticing their tremendous growth not only in size but also in quality we decided that they have advanced considerably, which enabled them to rank as the 4nd best web host.

Price & Cost Effectiveness
In terms of pricing and getting what you paid for they are pretty good compared to many others. Their one price, one package policy makes it easy for people who are new to webhosting. We have yet to check out how easy it is to upgrade and add features to your current account. iPowerWeb got completely reloaded with more space and more features, also including free domain name privacy. You get now $30 credit towards Google AdWords and FREE $50 Yahoo! Search Marketing Credit. iPowerWeb offers domains to their customers at our wholesale price - just $6.50 a year! These prices apply for every extension we offer -- from .com to .us. Every iPowerWeb domain name registration comes with many free bonuses, such as a FREE domain parking page, FREE email forwarding, and FREE WHOIS Privacy for your domain name.

Data Center (toured)
iPowerWeb is colocating their servers with AT&T Global. To date, we have not toured their data center so we cannot say for sure if everything that they promise is actually true. AT&T Global's data centers are protected from intrusion and failure by multi-layered security, full redundancy, diversity, and rapid response recovery measures. Their center has 2N (dual, fully redundant) Uninterruptible Power Supply (UPS) systems. They ensure no single point of failure throughout the backup power system.iPowerWeb rates best when it comes to connectivity and speed. They recently formalized a partnership with AT&T to be their new upstream provider. Their Data Center is now integrated with the highest performing OC48/OC192 IP backbone available. If you are looking for Speed, this might be the right place for you, however, you should not forget to take the other points into consideration as well.

Customer Service
In terms of customer service our experience with iPowerWeb was not bad, however, not too good either. Their team can be reached 24 hours a day, seven days a week. If you need immediate assistance, however, it is probably not fast enough to have an email answered after 24 hours. The person on the phone line was friendly, however, not much of a help when we were pretending to experience a technical issue with our hosting account with them. That was probably just a one-time bad experience because when we checked it out another few times, we did get a very good and helpful response even via phone.

Customer Testimonial:

"I am the owner of a small Web Design company with several clients that have small businesses. I contacted Ipowerweb via email and less than 24 hours later I had a real live human on the phone. Not knowing exactly how to go about getting all my domains transferred as well as all the sites I designed, my contact "Trey Gardner" from Ipowerweb stepped right in and said "No Problem, when you get ready for the transfer we will take care of it and walk you through it". Ipowerweb had a No Pressure sales approach and gave me a direct contact phone number along with email and said he would be my contact from now on. Even when my contact "Trey" went on vacation, someone else was given the responsibility to handle all my needs and did it with the same professionalism as always. These guys perform as a professional hosting company should. A no excuses, reliable web hosting company that does what they say they will do at an affordable rate! Keep up the great work!"

support is a joke. the live chat guys in Mangalore/India are not connected to any department and have not even basic knowledge. they are rude and repelling, phone support is like being on hold at least 40 minutes and then they hang up on you. don't ever expect real help ! you get automated email replies, run-arounds, or they simply do not reply anymore.

too many accounts hosted on a server, down times, data loss, databases disappear, email accounts as well. they demand 50USD for a restore, although they caused it. email accounts cannot be restored.

maximum number of files is 50,000 for shared server and 200,000 for VPS is a joke ! this includes emails, too. means if you have 500 email accounts with 100 emails each (inbox, sent, deleted, drafts, spam etc.) you can't upload a single file to your webspace. without any email your average file size has to be 6MB to use up the space they offer. absurd !

50,000 SQL queries per hour makes it impossible to run a web shop unless you don't have any visitors.

ipowerweb is famous for unauthorized credit card charges, well known to BBB and FTC, some CC companies refuse to process transfers with them because they have a history of fraud and similar.

have fun trying to transfer a domain name or account to another hosting company. after all the hassle they will charge your CC at least one more time - without authorization.

the list is too long to mention all...

stay away, stay away.

I work in a government office. When iPower changed to their vDeck system, we were unable to utilize the control panel through our firewall. The customer service trying to resolve this issue was horrendous. I spoke with people who had so little knowledge, they did not even know what a server-side include was. They ended up telling us we could not use vDeck unless we opened a port (which we can't do).

Additionally, the phone wait times are very long, and, they use internet phone service, so there can be large gaps as the call drops in and out.

It absolutely DUMBFOUNDS me how they can stay at the top of the ratings. I used to be a fan of theirs as I also use them for various client websites, but not anymore.

You get what you pay for. The business pro plan is about $100 a year, and you can't expect to have instant satisfaction when dealing with support. I give them a 7 because, you are getting a nice toolset and reasonable response time (~24hrs) for the price. Expect to struggle a little bit when you have issues, but be patient, because all these companies at this price model are going to be the same. Something I have noticed is that lately IPowerWeb appears to be changing it's name to IPower. There are 2 websites, 1 new (ipower.com) and 1 old (ipowerweb.com). I am wondering if it is being done to distinguish them from PowWeb a completely different company? The new website has different hosting plans with vDeck on it's unix servers than the old one which using cpanel. I get the impression that cpanel is being phased out and vdeck is still in a beta stage but is being pushed on anyone willing to switch from cpanel and giving to all new customers. I just switched this week and there are several migration issues that people should look out for. So far, vDeck recycle bin, MySQLAdmin password change, vDeck login (getting that vDeck DB down message a lot), and outgoing mail didn't work. And everytime it was worked on, the whole site was down for 24 hrs (did the case worker, go home for the day?).

DO NOT USE THIS HOST!!!!!!
The billing dept is 100% AWOL when it comes to helping you. I have been trying for a week to reach a person in billing to discuss an upcoming automatic renewal of my account. No one is home. You are either placed on permanent hold or told that their system is down and that they will return your call (don't hold your breath!!). E-mails to IPower are equally ignored. All you receive is an endless chain of replies stating that they will respond shortly (they don't). If you call Sales and they find out you are asking about an EXISTING account, you are immediately slammed over to billing (read the avove). Don't let the cute responses by people from IPower on some of the review sites fool you. You will not be able to reach them, even though they write responses with their phone extension, etc. I'm close (very close) to calling the Santa Monica Police, Bunko division if they do any unathorized billing to my credit card.

AVOID LIKE THE PLAGUE!!!! YOU HAVE BEEN WARNED!!!

I have had the same customer service problems as the previous opinion states. Can only contact throught email... and some automated reply gets spit back to me without any resolution. I have been dealing with this for the past (2) weeks and below is the latest transcript between myself and ipower technical support.

I will update with the outcome, but it looks like I will be switching my host.
Any companies out there who think they can provide better customer service than ipower is welcome to contact me for my business.

This is not the case.... My emails are not reaching there destinations. Just tested a few minutes ago. Regardless if the destination is yahoo, aol, or whatever.

The email message states "message succesfully sent" after I send an email, but none of my recipients are receiving the email.

There are (2) email accounts within my blendproductions.com vdeck webmail application:

nick@blendproductions.com
craig@blendproductions.com

I am currently using the vdeck webmail system for my email application. The URL associated with this is www.blendproductions.com <http://www.blendproductions.com>

This is a serious matter and my business is tied into this email account. At this point I will need a phone call from one of your associates on this matter so we can quickly resolve this problem.

I have given your team ample time and opportunity to try and contact me via telephone on this situation. This email problem is a huge mystery to me and your team can't seem to grasp the concept that the Vdeck server or something else is blocking alll my outgoing messages eventhough it states that it was successfully sent.

I recommend you forward this to a senior level person within your company who has the time to call me on the phone, otherwise I will be switching my domain to another company.

Just to clarify the severity of this situation. blendproductions.com is my business email.

I haven't been able to send emails from this account in over 2 weeks.

Imagine what this is doing to my business and my sanity.

I have been emailing technical support over and over for a resolution and everytime I get a reply and from someone new asking me the same question. "What is your email account and password?" There is no follow through to your technical support. It's like a re-occurring nightmare day after day.

I certainly hope that this whole situation is just a stupid human error on my end, but ipower web has shown very little resolution to a problem that should have been resolved the first time I contacted your company.

I would like to share with you our dismal experience thus far with ipower. For two to three weeks, we have attempted to work in good faith with ipower on some very serious issues to our business. Spending very significant executive time, our company attempted to work with ipower relative to dedicated server problems on ipower's part, which resulted in more than 300+ unexpected shut-downs over a short period of time. For example, with respect to 8/8/2005, alone, we experienced 17 unexpected shut-downs alone. What we were told is that ipower would look into it and get back to us. The last time we had that discussion (very a websession, was on the 17th. Yet, no one has gotten back to us, other than a "robo" message presuming everything is fixed unless ipower hears back from us within x amount of hours. Because we are not interacting with the server during those times of unexpected shutdown, the customer relations person at ipower (who simply ended up providing us with nothing but a "link for assistance") recognized hardware issues on ipower's ends. Yet, still, ipower seems to be continuing to shrug off the issue in full, ignoring us and not giving us any proper attention -- attention required for this small company of ours to survive. Imagine our having some 300+ unexpected shutdowns with no attention from ipower had we gone live as yet?!?!? However, the unexpected shutdowns continue. Further, we simply wanted help with ipower with respect to linking up an ip address to our domain name, which we purchased from ipower. Several hours of attempts on our part proved fruitless, resulting in a simple suggestion that we review online literature on the issue. This is not the type of service from ipower that we bargained for. What is so frustrating is the type of benign neglect we are facing. Several times we attempted to escalate the issue. And, several times we were told that ipower would provide to us no point person or named identity to help us stabilize things. Just yesterday, I was left on hold for more than 20 minutes before I simply hung up. So, this is NOT the type of service that I anticipated, based on the reviews of ipower that appear to be out there. Jim Schuster, President, Simpliance.
